Is an Avocado a Fruit or a Vegetable?

This is a discussion I had one with of my elementary classes and I am here to resolve it once and for all. IT IS A FRUIT! Don’t worry if you thought differently, it is a common misconception that avocados are vegetables. They are native to Central America and are technically classified as a large berry with a single seed. The definition of a fruit by the Merriam-Webster dictionary says that it is usually the edible reproductive body of a seed plant. They are categorized as a fruit because you can eat an avocado and then grow another one from its seed or pit.

Fun Facts About Avocados

  • there 500 varieties of avocados in the world
  • they are also known as “alligator pears” because of their leathery texture and shape
  • in the United States, California is responsible for 95 percent of avocado production

  • they are low in saturated fat
  • the fruit does not contain sodium or cholesterol
  • they a are high in potassium, vitamin, K, E, B5 and C
  • avocados are higher in potassium than bananas
  • they are very versatile and can be used in sweet and savory dishes

How to Make Best Ever Guacamole

  1. Slice the avocados in half, remove the pits, and gently scoop out the creamy flesh into a large bowl.
  2. Next, mash the avocado until it is a smooth consistency with some chunks still present. (You can make the guacamole as chunky or smooth as you’d like) You can use a potato masher or a fork.
  3. Once the avocado’s consistency is to your liking add the salt, pepper, cumin, paprika, and garlic powder.
  4. Fold in the spices with a spatula. Zest and juice one lime and add the ingredient into the mixture as well. (The zest adds an extra splash of freshness.)
  5. Drizzle and fold in one tablespoon of olive oil into the dish.
  6. Chop half of an heirloom tomato and onion. Finely chop about two tablespoons of cilantro. Fold into the guacamole.
  7. Scoop the guacamole into a decorative bowl. Garnish with a sprinkle of chopped tomato and onion, 1/4 wedge of lime, two colorful tortilla chips, a piece of cilantro, and a dusting of paprika.
  8. Serve with tortilla chips or fresh veggies.
