Frequently Asked Questions
Can you decorate with cream cheese frosting?
YES! This frosting recipe is perfect for cake or cupcake decorating. It is stiff and easily pipe-able. I used it for my carrot cake cupcakes and it made elegant rosette patterns that held their shape.
How do I make the frosting thicker or thinner?
If you’d like to make the frosting thicker you can add more powdered sugar, a little at a time. Although, this recipe is fantastic because it already makes a thick frosting. If you make your frosting too thick and need to thin it, add a tablespoon of cream or milk at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
Does the frosting need to be refrigerated?
Yes, keep your frosted dessert in an airtight container and refrigerate.
What desserts are elevated by using cream cheese frosting?
One of my favorite desserts to use cream cheese frosting for is Carrot Cake Cupcakes. This frosting also pairs well with red velvet cake, hummingbird cake, chocolate brownies, cinnamon rolls, pumpkin spice desserts, key lime flavors, and so much more.
How to Make Cream Cheese Frosting
- In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to combine the softened butter and cream cheese until it is a smooth consistency. (A hand-held electric mixer works just fine.)
- Next, add in the vanilla extract and salt.
- With the mixer on a low speed, gradually add in the powdered sugar a little bit at a time until it is completely incorporated.
- Use the frosting to decorate cupcakes or cakes once they are fully cooled.
